What is experiential sound design?
Experiential sound design is the acoustic design of physical spaces and experiences: flagship stores, trade fair stands, showrooms, exhibitions, lounges and events. Classic sound design scores pictures. Experiential sound design scores places. The sound is derived from your brand and composed, curated and controlled for one specific space.
Spaces without a sound concept still have a sound, just a random one: ventilation, beeping devices, whatever playlist happens to run at the till. Leave the acoustics unplanned and a large part of how visitors perceive the space is left to chance. Our article In-Store Audio: Sound as a Sales Factor in Retail shows how strongly sound works in retail and which levers you can use.
The three layers of experiential sound:
- Soundscape, the composed acoustic atmosphere of a space: textures, timbres and recurring motifs that fit the brand and hold up over hours.
- Music curation, playlist architecture with a daily dramaturgy: calmer mornings, more energetic midday hours, a warmer late afternoon. Tempo and volume steer dwell time and conversation comfort.
- Acoustic zoning, distinct sound zones for entrance, product areas, consultation and checkout, with clean transitions instead of one uniform wash of sound.
Only the interplay of these three layers turns background playback into a sound experience visitors feel, even if they never put a name to it.

How a spatial sound project works.
1. Space & Concept Analysis
We review the space, floor plan and audience: walking routes, dwell zones, reverberation, existing speaker systems. For trade fair projects we ideally join as soon as the stand concept is approved.
2. Sound Concept & Zoning
We define sound zones, the soundscape direction and the music strategy. You receive a concept that brings brand sound, dramaturgy and technology together before anything is produced.
3. Production & Curation
We produce soundscapes, loops and special elements and curate the music including its daily dramaturgy. Sign-off happens in the space itself, under real conditions.
4. Rollout & Ongoing Care
We set up the playout together with your technical partner or stand builder, document volume and scheduling rules, and update soundscapes and playlists in agreed cycles.

Frequently asked questions about
experiential sound.
It starts with an analysis of the space, the audience and the existing technology. We then define sound zones and the creative direction, produce the soundscapes and curate the music. Finally we set up the playout with your technical partner and document volume and scheduling rules for daily operation.
Often the existing speaker system is enough. We check it during the analysis phase and tell you honestly whether it can carry the concept. If new hardware is needed, we specify it vendor-neutrally and coordinate with your integrator, shopfitter or stand builder.
Ideally we start as soon as the stand concept is approved. Analysis, zoning concept, production and sign-off take several weeks, and large stands with many zones take longer. The earlier sound is part of the planning, the better it can be aligned with stand construction and media technology.
Yes. Product ranges change, campaigns come and go, spaces get rebuilt. We update playlists and soundscapes in agreed cycles, adjust the daily dramaturgy and deliver new content for seasonal phases or special areas.
Background music fills silence. Experiential sound design combines soundscape, curated music and acoustic zoning into one concept derived from your brand. Tempo, volume and time of day are controlled deliberately instead of being left to chance.
