Cinema 5.1 Surround Upmix
for the nationwide CNS ad.
When an image advertisement is set to broadcast nationwide across cinemas, pristine audio is paramount. For the campaign of the National Health Fund (CNS) in Luxembourg, we crafted an immersive 5.1 Cinema Surround Upmix derived entirely from a conventional stereo mix, allowing the message to reach its full acoustic impact on the big screen.
From a compact stereo mix
to a room-filling cinematic experience.
While a standard stereo mix works exceptionally well for TV, web, and social media, it quickly loses its power and spatial depth inside a large movie theater. The main challenge for the nationwide CNS cinema ad was breaking down the existing stereo material and upmixing it into a genuine 5.1 surround experience—ensuring the sound envelops the entire auditorium without compromising the original mix’s delicate balance and intentionality.
From two channels
into the three-dimensional cinema space.
To meet the stringent requirements of theatrical distribution, Campera Media executed the upmix through a series of highly precise technical steps:
Frequency Analysis & Stem Separation
We rigorously analyzed the stereo master and separated key elements like dialogue, music, and sound effects as far as technically possible to gain absolute control over the upmixing process.
Center Channel & Speech Intelligibility
In cinemas, dialogue traditionally originates 100% from the center speaker located directly behind the screen. We isolated and stabilized the spoken components in the center to guarantee crystal-clear speech intelligibility from every seat in the house.
Spatial Expansion & Surround Routing
Musical elements and atmospheric effects were expanded into the L/R and surround channels using advanced algorithms and precise manual panning, ensuring the auditorium was completely filled with the campaign's sonic identity.
LFE Extension & Leq(m) Cinema Mastering
To provide the spot with the necessary cinematic low-end foundation, the LFE (subwoofer) channel was distinctly driven. Finally, the 5.1 mix was mastered according to strict Leq(m) cinema guidelines (e.g., 82dB Leq(m) for commercial blocks) to ensure optimal volume and full compatibility with the DCP (Digital Cinema Package) format.
Maximum immersion
for a crucial message.
Thanks to the dynamic and spacious 5.1 upmix, the CNS image ad achieved unmatched presence across the country's cinemas. Audiences experienced the health fund's message not just visually, but felt entirely and acoustically immersed in the narrative.
“Cinema is pure emotion—and emotion is largely generated by a room-filling, physically tangible sound. With our 5.1 upmix, we ensured that the powerful visual message of the CNS acoustically reached and deeply impacted the entire audience in the auditorium.”

Questions about Cinema
Audio Post-Production.
A professional 5.1 surround upmix for a single commercial typically costs between €1,500 and €4,000, depending on the length and complexity of the source material. The upmix includes full surround processing, final mix to DCI standards, and delivery as a DCP-compatible audio master.
Cinema advertising plays on high-resolution surround sound systems. A simple stereo spot sounds flat and unprofessional in this environment because the rear and centre channels remain empty. A professional 5.1 upmix harnesses the full spatial potential of the cinema auditorium, ensuring the ad emotionally envelops the audience.
A single 5.1 surround upmix can be completed in 2–3 working days. For more extensive projects with multiple language versions or additional sound design, we allow 5–10 working days. Express delivery within 24 hours is available with sufficient notice.
