What is UX sound design?

UX sound design shapes the sound of digital products: apps, websites, devices, vehicle interfaces. While classic sound design scores images, UX sound design scores interactions. Every tone has a job: it confirms an input, signals an event, or makes a state audible that the display is not showing right now.

Products need sound for three reasons. First, feedback: an audible confirmation tells users faster than any animation that their input has arrived. Second, orientation: users recognize by sound whether a message is urgent, without looking. Third, brand recognition: product sound is a touchpoint where your brand shows up daily, often more frequently than in any campaign.

Principles of good product sound:

  • Sparing: Not every interaction needs a tone. Sound that speaks too often gets muted. We use sound only where it carries information.
  • Informative: Every sound encodes a meaning: success, error, alert, progress. Users learn the vocabulary after a few encounters, like earcons in a well-built interface.
  • On-brand: UX sounds derive from your sonic identity. Tonality, material, and character match the sound logo and the brand music world.
  • Mutable and accessible: Auditory feedback supports people who cannot see the display or are not looking at it. At the same time, every sound stays mutable and every piece of information remains available visually. Accessibility is part of the concept from the start.

Interaction & Feedback Sounds

Click, confirmation, error, success: we design the acoustic feedback that accompanies users through every interaction. Subtle enough for daily use, clear enough for orientation.

Notification Systems

Notifications with hierarchy: important events sound different from casual ones. We develop notification sounds as a system, so users hear priorities before they look at the display.

App & Web Audio

Sound for iOS, Android, and browsers: app sounds, onboarding moments, micro-interactions, and audio for web interfaces, aligned with platform conventions and your brand world.

Automotive UX Sound

HMI sounds for vehicle interfaces and AVAS for electric vehicles. Read how electric cars may and must sound in our article on AVAS sound design for electric vehicles.

Sonification

Making data and states audible: charge levels, readings, system status. Sonification translates information into sound where a glance at the display is not possible or not wanted.

Sound Systems & Delivery

Formats, naming, loudness, implementation specs: you receive a documented sound library your development team can build in right away. On request with guidelines for future extensions.

Workflow

How your product sound takes shape.

1. Audit & Briefing

We analyze your product, its usage situations, and your existing sonic identity. Which interactions need acoustic feedback, and where is silence the better answer?

2. Sound Concept

We define your product's sound language: tonality, materiality, relation to your sonic branding. Every sound family gets clear rules for priority, repeatability, and loudness.

3. Design & Prototyping

We design the sounds and test them in the product context: on the device, in the app, in the vehicle. Iterations run closely with your design and development team.

4. Specs & Delivery

You receive all sounds in the required formats along with implementation specs: file names, trigger mapping, loudness values, and the behavior of overlapping events.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about
UX sound design.

A sound logo is a brand's acoustic trademark, short and built for recognition. UX sounds are functional sounds inside the product: they confirm inputs, signal events, and provide orientation. Both belong to the same sonic identity but serve different jobs. Ideally, the UX sounds are derived from the sonic branding.

Fewer than most people expect. What matters is a clear system: a few core events such as confirmation, error, and notification, plus graded variants for priorities. A lean set stays learnable and does not wear out. We define the exact scope in the audit, based on your most important user journeys.

You receive all sounds in the formats of your target platform, for example for iOS, Android, web, or embedded systems, along with implementation specs: file names, trigger mapping, loudness values, and notes on the behavior of overlapping events. On request, we document the sound system as a guideline for future extensions.

Four steps: audit and briefing, sound concept, design and prototyping in the product context, then specs and delivery. You are involved at every milestone, your development team at the latest from the prototyping stage.
