Remote voice recording:
join via session link
In December 2020 we recorded the Valentine's Day campaign 2021 for M&M's. The voice talent stood in our studio in Cologne, and because of Covid hardly anyone else could come in. Agency and client were still there for every take, via a session link. That is what a remote recording looks like when it is done well: everyone listens, nobody has to travel.
The short version
Remote does not mean giving up direction. With live approval via session link the talent is in the studio, you listen from anywhere in studio quality and give feedback straight away. Talent with their own studio we connect via Source-Connect. A good session needs three things above all: a final script, one person for feedback and a pair of headphones.

1. Why approve remotely
A voice recording often has many stakeholders: the agency, the brand team, sometimes the legal department. Getting everyone into the studio on the same day costs time and travel budget. With remote approval, everyone stays where they work anyway and still hears every take the moment it happens.
The biggest advantage is sign-off. Whoever is there live can say what is missing while the talent is still at the microphone. That saves re-records, new bookings and weeks of emails.
During Covid this became standard for us: on M&M's and on the MAKO documentary series for DWS and Healthy Seas, the clients joined via session link instead of sitting in the control room. It stayed because it works.
2. Three ways to record remotely
| Way | Who is where | Works well for |
|---|---|---|
| Live approval via session link | Talent and direction in our studio, you and the agency listen from anywhere | Spots, campaigns and anything that needs sign-off during the session |
| Remote talent via Source-Connect | Talent in their own studio, direction and recording on our side, you can listen too | Foreign languages, native speakers abroad, specific voices that cannot travel |
| Self-recording with file delivery | Talent records alone and sends the files, we check, edit and mix | Long texts with little room for interpretation, such as updates to existing modules |
For most advertising projects the first way is the best: room, microphone and direction are with us, and you are still there. The third way has no live direction. That saves time, but emphasis and pace can only be changed afterwards with a new recording.
3. How the session link works
Before the recording you receive a link. At the agreed time you open it and hear the talent the way we hear them in the control room, in studio quality and without a delay that gets in the way of the conversation. At the same time we are connected on a call: you say what you notice, we work on it with the talent.
Important: What you hear through the link is the monitoring path. The recording itself is made in the studio at full resolution. The file you receive at the end is the studio recording, not the stream.
Direction stays with us. You and your agency say what matters to you, we turn it into instructions for the talent: a little warmer, a touch faster, the brand name clearer. That way the talent gets clear notes instead of five opinions at once.
4. What to prepare
- Final script: The text is approved before the session starts. Last-minute changes are possible, but every discussion about the text costs recording time.
- Pronunciation: Clarify names, product names and technical terms in advance, ideally with a short list. With English brand names in German spots this almost always comes up.
- One voice for feedback: Everyone may listen, one person collects the feedback. That keeps the session quick and the talent focused.
- Video or timing: If the text has to fit picture, send us the video in advance. Then we record to length right away.
- Headphones: Laptop speakers swallow detail. With headphones you hear what we hear.
- A quiet place and a stable connection: Ideally not from a train and not from an open-plan office.
Your recording, heard live
We cast the talent, direct and record in our studios in Frankfurt, Cologne or Berlin. You listen from anywhere and sign off on the spot.
Request a recording →5. How a session runs
- Quick tech check: Shortly before the start you open the link, we check that you can hear well and that we can understand you.
- Read-through: The talent reads the text once. This sets the direction: pace, attitude, energy.
- Takes: We record, you listen and give feedback. Good versions are marked straight away.
- Alternatives: A slightly shorter version, a different emphasis on the claim. Whatever is recorded now does not need a new booking later.
- Sign-off: At the end of the session it is clear which takes will be used.
- Edit, mix, delivery: We then edit and mix and deliver in the formats you need, for TV, radio, social media or Spotify.
6. Common mistakes
Too many voices in the feedback. When five people voice wishes at once, the talent no longer knows what to listen for. Better: listen, collect, one person speaks.
Rewriting the script during the session. Small changes are no problem. If the text is rethought from scratch, the talent waits while the clock runs.
Judging on laptop speakers. What sounds fine there can be too close or too dull on headphones, and the other way round.
Forgetting usage rights. Whether the spot runs only online or also on TV, for one year or indefinitely, decides the fee. Clarify it before the recording. More in the article What does a voice-over cost?
7. Examples from the studio
- Mars, M&M's Valentine's Day 2021: recorded in December 2020 in our studio in Cologne, commissioned by an agency. Direction and recording were ours, agency and client were connected live via session link and heard every take as it happened.
- Wagner Big City Pizza: in 2019 we researched and cast the voice and recorded with direction. The client was connected remotely, listened live and gave feedback directly in the session. Then the mix for social media, online and Spotify.
- DWS × Healthy Seas, MAKO documentary series: in 2021 we cast the narration and recorded it with direction in our studio, including lead narrator Martin Heckmann. Because of Covid, DWS and Healthy Seas joined live via session link.

remote recording.
Usually not. You get a link before the session, open it at the agreed time and listen. What matters is a pair of headphones and a stable connection.
No. The recording is made in the studio at full quality. The link is how you listen, the file you receive at the end is the studio recording.
Yes. Agency, brand team and, if needed, the legal department can all listen in, just like on the Valentine's Day campaign for M&M's. It helps when one person collects the feedback.
Yes. We connect talent with their own studio via Source-Connect. Direction and recording happen on our side, and you can still listen live.
That depends on length, talent and usage rights, not on whether you sit in the studio. You get a quote up front.
