Songs for YouTubers and creators:
formats, process, rights

By Rahim Erbil 18 October 2026 8 min read

Kelly's "Clickbait" has over 5.7 million views on YouTube. The song was made in our studio: composed, produced, lyrics co-written with Kelly, mixed, and the video shot as well. It shows what an original song can be for a channel: not a by-product, but one of the strongest formats there is.

The short version

For creators a song is a content format of its own that fans share, sing along to and come back to. Five formats have proven themselves: the original song, the music video, covers and challenges, brand collaborations with music and the channel intro sound. What matters is a clear process and settling the rights early, especially with covers.

1. Why an original song works for creators

You watch a video once. You listen to a song again. It ends up in playlists, gets reused in Shorts and covered by the community. For creators that means a well-made song keeps working longer than almost any other video on the channel.

Then there is closeness. Fans see their creator in a new role, often with a wink, sometimes surprisingly serious. That is exactly what turns songs into moments people talk about.

2. Five formats that work

The original song. A song that fits the channel and the personality. Kelly's "Clickbait" is the best-known example from our studio.

The milestone song. A subscriber special is the perfect occasion. For CrispyRob we produced "Remember My Name" for his 500,000-subscriber special, together with Rob in the studio.

Covers and challenges. Formats like the One Take Song Challenge live on pace and spontaneity. For Katja Krasavice and Phil Laude we recorded such videos in our Cologne studio; "SUGAR DADDY in 10 styles" has over 2.6 million views.

Brand collaborations with music. A song instead of a classic product test: for Blue Microphones a cover of "Come Through", for ASUS ROG a piano cover of "Monster", produced entirely on the laptop. The collaboration itself becomes the content.

The intro sound. A short sound that makes the channel instantly recognisable, essentially a sound logo for YouTube. For the channel Cinema Strikes Back we developed exactly that kind of intro.

3. How the song comes together

  • Idea and briefing: What is it about, for whom, in which style? This is where it is decided whether the song sounds like you.
  • Songwriting: Lyrics and melody, ideally together. For Clickbait and Jeremy Grube's "Perfekt" the lyrics were co-written with the artists; for Robin Becker the whole song came from us.
  • Production: beat, arrangement, sounds. This is where the song gets its character.
  • Vocal recording and vocal production: in the studio, with direction. Good vocal production brings out the best in any voice, even if singing is not your main job.
  • Mix and master: so the song works on a phone just as well as on headphones and in the car.
  • Video and release: optionally with a music video. For Clickbait, direction and camera also came from our team.

4. Rights: who owns what?

Legally a song consists of several parts: the composition, the lyrics and the recording, the so-called master. Who holds what should be settled before production, not once the song is a success.

Original songs: here you can freely agree who owns composition, lyrics and master and how income is split. If you are or want to become a member of a collecting society, registration is part of it too.

Covers: the song remains a work of the original authors. On YouTube, covers are often matched to the rights holders through Content ID, and revenue then goes to them in whole or in part. If you want to use a cover in a paid brand collaboration, clear the licence first.

5. What creators often underestimate

  • Starting too late: the subscriber-special song needs lead time. It has to be finished before the milestone.
  • Putting everything in: one clear idea carries better than ten in-jokes. The community should laugh or feel, not puzzle.
  • Wasting the first seconds: on a phone the opening decides. A strong hook belongs early in the song.
  • Thinking in one version only: short clips for Shorts and Reels, an instrumental for your own videos: plan them from the start and the song works much longer.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about
songs for creators.

It depends on the scope: a beat, a finished song with vocals or a song with video, and whether we develop an existing idea or write everything from scratch. You receive a quote in advance covering every step and the rights.

Yes. Good vocal production gets a lot out of any voice, and not every song needs big vocal lines. Rap, chorus hooks or a guest voice work just as well.

We agree on that up front: composition, lyrics and the recording itself, the master. With original songs you can keep the rights; with covers the song remains a work of the original authors.

Yes. Idea, songwriting and feedback work well on calls. For the vocal recording the studio is worth it, because room and microphone make the difference. If that does not work, we record with live direction via a session link.

For a milestone like a subscriber special: well before the date. Songwriting, recording, mix and video each take time, and the song should be ready when the moment comes, not after.
