2. What an Atmos mix technically is
The most important difference from surround gets overlooked constantly. Atmos is not “stereo with more speakers”, it is object-based.
In a conventional mix you assign signals to fixed channels: left, right, centre. In Atmos you describe the position of a sound in space instead, and the playback system works out which speakers produce it. A snare can sit 30 degrees right, slightly elevated. On a rig with four ceiling speakers that sounds different than on a soundbar, but the artistic intent survives.
In practice you work with two kinds of material:

- a hollowed-out centre, because the lead vocal was pushed too far forward
- woolly bass, because low frequencies sit as an object instead of in the bed
- lost height channels that simply vanish in the fold-down
- a mix that feels quieter than the stereo version, which is fatal in a playlist context
An experienced Atmos mix therefore switches constantly between the room monitoring and the headphone fold-down. Not at the end as a check, but continuously, as a second source of truth. Notice this at mastering and you are mixing again.

That last case is the one that blows up projects. If all that survives from a 2013 production is a stereo bounce, there is no Atmos mix to be made, only a simulation, and it sounds like one. Before planning a catalogue conversion, audit the state of the sessions. That inventory is unglamorous and saves five-figure sums.
6. Stereo first or Atmos first?
The conventional order is: finish stereo, then derive Atmos from it. It is comfortable, because the stereo master serves as a reference, and it is the reason many Atmos mixes sound like a wider version of the same mix.
The more interesting order is parallel. When everyone knows during production that a spatial mix is coming, arrangements emerge that actually use space: a backing vocal that does not have to fight the lead because it sits behind the head. A delay that travels upward instead of clogging the centre.
For catalogue work, stereo first remains reality. For new productions, running them in parallel is the only route where Atmos adds something artistically rather than merely existing technically. And only then does the mix justify the extra effort beyond the royalty rate.
